What I Wore {Summer Rompers in the Fall}

Jo Johnson, the genius behind the camera at Maude, took some pics for me a few weeks ago. Love how they turned out and as awkward as having pictures of yourself taken is for me, she made it enjoyable. Way more enjoyable than when Aaron takes my pictures. Which he hasn't done in so long (hence why there haven't been any WIW posts lately) because it's torturous....for the both of us!

Anywho...I love ROMPERS. They are effortless,  stylish, and on trend. I thought it would be fun to pair a couple of my favorite summer rompers with fall staples for a fun transitional look. And in Arkansas, with our fall weather allllllll over the place, you can wear either of these outfits well into November. End of October and the high today is 80ยบ. Feels like June. And I swear it always seems to be sunny and in the 70s on Thanksgiving Day.

I got this romper from Gap over the summer and love it so much. I wore the heck out of it this summer and love it paired with this flannel and booties for the fall. And y'all this flannel is EVERYTHING. It's long so you can pair it with leggings and it is so super soft.

This jumpsuit is everything. I got it over the summer for an event I went to and it is so comfortable and easy to wear! Super flattering and looks great with heavy jewels and fancy shoes for a night out on the town. But also so great paired with a denim jacket for a more casual look.

-->> don't forget when shopping at shopmaude.com to use code: HELLOHIGH at checkout to receive 10% off! the jumpsuit, booties, and the flannel are all still in stock! and as always, they offer FREE SHIPPING. woo hoo!

Happy H A L L O W E E N weekend ghouls + goblins. Hope its spooky + spectacular!

First Day of Fall {favorites}

Y'all, hi! Its been a while. We have been all consumed with school and after school activities. I took on a few Hello, High Handmades orders over the last month so that was fun to sit at my sewing machine a little bit. I had great intentions of releasing a fall line but like always, I was over zealous and have only one pattern of the eight different styles cut out. So instead of releasing them all at once into my Etsy shop they will be gradually added piece by piece. Harry started PreK-3 a couple of weeks ago so I finally have some free time to actually think and hopefully I'll get back into my creating mode. All that to say, we've been busy and life is good right now. As unstructured and chaotic as it is.

So, today is the first day of fall SOOOOOO WHERE IS FALL? It's so blasted hot and humid in NW-AR right now that it feels like the dead middle of summer. It's all good. I really do love the heat and I'll be praying for it when winter hits BUT I am ready for cozy clothes. Sweaters, booties, layers...

I haven't done too much fall shopping lately, just a few pieces from Maude here and there. Its just been too dang hot to even entertain sweaters and layers. But I have been pinning lots of inspirational fall outfits and pieces I want to add to my wardrobe this fall and winter.

Oversized sweater. Denim on colored denim. Oversized cardigan. Trench with sneakers.

Denim on denim on denim. Hat and clogs. OVERALLS! Bomber, plaid and sneakers.

LOVE all these looks! Can't wait to replicate them this fall. I really have got to find a pair of overalls. That has been on my list for months but I just can't find a pair I love.

Some of my favorite fall finds from Maude. I recently purchased the oversized leopard sweater and the coney plaid shirt. Both are so super soft. I'm sure I will live in them in the coming months. And they have the CUTEST BOOTIES YOU EVER DID SEE RIGHT NOW. Basically I'm never going to get a paycheck. But at least I'll have cute clothes and shoes.

AND guess what? I got a laptop a few days ago! WOO HOO. I see so much more blogging in my future. SO much more convenient and appealing to be able to have it on my lap anywhere I choose rather than being holed up in my office. Who knew?

Happy Thursday! Hope its a great one. It's our Friday..yayay! The kids are out of school tomorrow and I am so looking forward to sleeping in.

#MaudeWall

The creative masterminds at Maude had the GENIUS idea to color-block the back of their building in the most amazing vibrant colors! It is stunning and a fashion bloggers' dream! It's been fun seeing lots of local bloggers already posing in front of the wall. Such a unique and fun addition to Fayetteville.

A couple of Saturdays ago Maude revealed the wall with an event to benefit Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. All proceeds went straight to CFF with fun vendors and desserts. It was such a great night at the #MaudeWall.

Jo Johnson, the amazing photographer behind all the images on the Maude website and instagram page, took the most beautiful pictures at the event. I thought it would be fun to share some of them here!

377B8898377B8897377B8894DESSERTS! Alchemy Macarons graciously donated 5 dozen macarons and they were delicious. My mouth is watering looking at this picture. I would give my left pinky toe for a mint chocolate one right now.

Well, hello there end of summer.

HI!

It.is. August 22nd. Where did our summer go? Elle started her THIRD week of First Grade today. Hard to believe we are already well into our school year. And Harry starts preschool (first time for us to be apart. glory!) in 2 1/2 weeks. We are both so ready. He talks about going to school every.single.day. We talk about the friends he'll make, the teachers he'll love, the things he'll learn and all the fun he'll have! I cannot wait to see him embark on this little adventure. And, selfishly, I cannot wait for a little ME time.

We had a full fun summer! And on top off all the fun, I started back sewing and working at MAUDE. So it was a packed summer. We made lots of fun memories and spent a lot of quality time together but we were certainly all ready for some structure when it came in the form of Elle starting First Grade. And by the way, she LOVES it. No surprise there. She started at a new school, not knowing a single soul, and is thriving like we knew she would. We love her new school and her sweet First Grade teacher.

Our big fun this summer was our beach vacation! My parents took us to Gulf Shores for an awesome and relaxing week on the beach! This has been the first year in many that the beach with kids has been enjoyable. Both of my kids love the sand and ocean and were content to play. Aaron would take them out on the kayak and I actually got to relax with a book. Fit in two during the week!

Also this summer, we added JUNIE to our family. She is a Blue Heeler mix but looks so much like a German Shepherd we think she must be part that too. She's about the sweetest dog we've ever known and has been such a joy to have around. We love her!

Summer 2016 was a good one! But we welcome a new season with open arms!

Happy Independence Day

ElleHarryJuly4_01
Happy Fourth of July from my patriotic pair!

How in the world has it been over a month since I last blogged. That is insanity. Summer has been crazy, full, fun, aaaaaannnnnnd exhausting. There's so much we want to fit in every week that it leaves little time for anything other than the typical household duties.

Hard to believe that our summer is halfway over and in less than a month (eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!) Elle will be headed back to school as a First Grader. Lots to fit in in the last month. Including the BEACH (woo hoo!), school supply shopping and play dates with friends.

It's going to be a crazy JULY. But we welcome it with open arms!

Happy Fourth!!!

What I Wore {Cropped Flare}

flarecrop02
Ok, guys. The cropped flare. Hands down, my favorite trend for spring, summer and fall. So flattering, easy to style and super comfortable. Seriously super comfortable. I love anything with a mid or high rise and these have that and that perfect amount of stretch.

flarecrop03

flarecrop0
I can't get enough of these jeans. I think they are so fun and different without looking like I'm trying too hard. You know, I did turn 33 last week, so it's not like I can just wear every single new trend out there anymore. But I'm definitely loving this one a whole whole lot!

The flare crop is so cute styled with heels, mules, flats, birkenstocks, slip ons, every shoe in my opinion. And every top as well: button ups, bohemian blouses, flowy tanks, a simple tee, fitted tanks. The styling possibilities are endless, as is the effort. They pair wonderfully and easily with everything. And the price point (for this particular pair) is pretty nice too ;)

If you are looking for a fun new trend to change it up a bit without stepping too far out of the box you should definitely give these jeans a try! I think you will really like them!

Search "cropped flare" on Pinterest and you will find all kinds of awesome style inspiration! Here are some looks that I just love and have inspired some of my recent outfits:

flarecropcollageSee? So versatile! Cool, chic, and effortless. Such a fun new trend that I hope sticks around for years and years like the skinny jean.

Happy Tuesday! Here's to hoping I have a more productive day than Monday. After single-parenting it last week and having Harry's 3rd birthday party (pics to come soon) at our house on Saturday, celebrating Mother's Day on Sunday, yesterday I literally sat on the couch all day. Lots of snuggles happened with my little man. I did get one load of laundry done AND went to the grocery store AND made dinner. So maybe I wasn't as big of a sloth as I thought at the time, but it was good day of rest that's for certain.

BBQ Yum Yum Bowls

T. G. I. F.

My husband has been out of town ALL week. And I am exhausted. And we are having a birthday party tomorrow. And I am exhausted. Ha. It has been a crazy week for us. I tend to take my husband's help for granted but after this week I am so thankful that he comes home every day after work. It's so different when he is not here. We miss him and will all be happy to see his face tonight!

So, I feel like overall we eat relatively healthy. We don't eat out just a ton. We have our moments for sure and some weeks we eat out more than others or we don't eat as healthy as we should at home. But if I'm on my meal-planning game and we are eating at home we definitely do pretty good. This week was a total bust with the hubs being out of town, but it's going to happen. I just try to do my best to feed my family well and not beat myself up if we have some busy days that end in the drive thru line. No shame in that game.

But when we are doing good, when I am doing good feeding my family healthy, then I usually plan for one indulgent meal a week. And that day is usually a Friday or Saturday night. Sometimes it's something I prepare at home and other times we go out. One our favorite indulgent meals are BBQ Yum Yum Bowls! We first had this at our favorite BBQ joint that is close to our house, Penguin Ed's. It was on their specials menu and Aaron got it one Saturday night and honestly, I was kind of grossed out by it, but it was/is SO good. They changed up their specials at our Penguin Ed's and they don't offer it anymore so I started making it at home.

IMG_1660
BBQ Yum Yum Bowl
(a barbecue version of the taco bowl)

Layer 1: Fritos
Layer 2: pulled pork (my favorite is Pioneer Woman's Spicy Dr. Pulled Pork [here])
Layer 3: canned baked beans, warmed up on the stove
Layer 4: coleslaw (shredded red cabbage, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper all to taste)
Layer 5: your favorite barbecue sauce
Layer 6: shredded cheddar

That simple. And so good!! It is a family favorite for us! My kids are big fans and ask for this all the time.

Every time I've made this I've either used pulled pork that I had frozen from a previous meal or leftover from earlier in the week. But you could start with the pork in the slow cooker all day, make the slaw the night before and let chill in the fridge all day and when you get home and everyone's hungry for dinner it is basically ready!

Happy Friday, friends. Hope you all have a great weekend.

What I Wore {Everyday Style}

Hey y'all. I have actually been remembering to take pictures of my daily outfits!! So here are a few of my everyday looks from the last month or so....

Can I just insert here that SPRING IS MY FAVORITE. I love layers and being comfort in layers and I am so not ready to bare it all yet. Don't get me wrong here, I do love love love the hot hot dayzzz of summer I really really really do, but I'm loving these 60s and 70s days with sun and breeze. Could do without the spring storms for sure, but have loved all the rain. AND Y'ALL SHOULD SEE THE FLOWER BEDS AT MY HOUSE. Holy Cannoli.

Everyday31This top is old and the jeans are also old but my favorite pair. DL Amanda [here]. I am loving the peplum fit that is so big right now. I've had this shirt since last spring (or maybe the spring before) it's a good transitional piece.

I've been eyeing some sleeveless peplum tops for the summer [here] [here] and [here].

Everyday30My go-to spring piece is this anorak! Y'all I seriously wear it every single day I feel like. Truth be told I threw it on over the white tee as well. It's so comfortable and instantly makes me feel put together, even if I haven't had a shower in a few days. (no really.....)

I got the anorak from Target last year. Mossimo's version this spring [here]. And it's on sale!

And the slub tee. So fun to put with a cute necklace. Another easy, errand-running outfit. Lots and lots of slub tees everywhere. Loving these from Forever21 [here] [here] [here].

Everyday29I have loved having this lightweight open cardigan this spring. Its enough weight to keep off the wind but not too warm to burn ya up! A clearance purchase from Old Navy [here] and a short sleeve version [here]. And my NEW sneaks! LOVE THEM! Kind of a random Target purchase [here] but I've already warn the heck out them. Getting ready to order myself a pair of Vans because these aren't really holding up to the wear but I'm thinking a pair of classic Vans will stand the test of time. Loving these [here] [here].

The tassel fringe necklace is a new purchase from Maude [similar] [similar]! I throw it on with everything.

Everyday28How sweet is this dress??? A recent purchase from Maude [here]! I love this floral print so much. I paired it with jeans for church because we served in the crawlers class and I knew I would be on the floor a lot but its a perfect length for us mamas to comfortably wear bare legged this summer. And it's fully lined!

Everyday27When in doubt wear this outfit. Or a version of this it. Chambray top and colored jeans. Its a classic. Both denim pieces are old but you can find similar [here] [here] and [here] [here].

Everyday26My favorite knotty top with an old, old old pair of jeans from Target that I ripped up myself. There's just something I love so much about a simple tee paired with destructed denim, a fun necklace and neutral sandals. Love these Seychelles at Maude right now [here] and this pair of distressed denim from Gap [here]. The necklace is also older from Maude but they always have the best statement jewelry! I've been eyeing this necklace [here].

I've linked up with The Pleated Poppy for her WIWW post today. Check out her blog [here] and the other linked posts. Awesome style inspo for us mamas for sure!

Hope you are all having a good week. It's been a long week (it's only Wednesday what?!) but we are surviving. Looking so very forward to the weekend and Harry's 3rd Birthday party on Saturday!! So excited for that!!

Today Harry is THREE!

Harry03_01This is without a doubt the best representation of him! WILD AND FREE this one. Never stops moving. Loves life so much! Full of passion and personality.

A Fish + Grits Recipe

I have, honest to goodness, been trying to post this for over a week now.

So Harry started sleeping in a twin bed a couple of weeks ago. That boy loved his crib and boy oh boy has it been a transition. He was getting out of his crib and I was afraid he was going to hurt himself and he was also having lots of accidents during nap time because he couldn't get out of his bed fast enough to get to the potty. So anyway we thought and we do know it was time for the big-boy bed but its been tough. I've had to lay down with him for every nap and at night to get him to go to sleep. You know how that goes. I go 90 to nothing all day so the second my head hits a pillow I am OUT. Which has been completely messing with my "my" time during naps and my "my" time after the kids go to bed! So all that to say blogging hasn't been going so well lately. We'll see how this week goes in the big-boy bed. Prayerfully it starts becoming less and less of an issue :)

So anywho... on to the new favorite meal in our house:

TilapiaGrits05Fish and grits. Specifically Cajun-seasoned tilapia served on a bed of Monterrey jack and white cheddar cheese grits with a side of pan-fried kale. Doesn't get much better than that. We have had this meal on our weekly menu for the last 3 weeks. Quick and easy to prepare, semi healthy (good protein, vitamins and nutrients with the fish and kale and a little indulgence for your taste buds with the cheese grits) and deeeelicious.

I don't love fish. I don't hate fish but I definitely don't love it. There are 2 salmon recipes I like and I've only ever made tilapia, heavily seasoned for fish tacos. So I definitely don't go looking for fish recipes and the only seafood I usually have on my menu is shrimp but one evening I was desperate and we had frozen tilapia fillets and we had grits and I googled 'tilapia and grits' recipe. I had a majority of the ingredients on hand and what I had to substitute or add turned out really good and into a meal that my family asks for. And being easy to prepare and semi-healthy I thought I would pass it on to you.

TilapiaGrits01Brush each filet with olive oil and minced garlic over each filet and then sprinkle with a little cajun seasoning, salt, pepper and fresh parsley. I let them sit and marinade for a few minutes while I melt butter in the skillet over medium-high heat. Once the butter is completely melted add the filets, seasoned side up to the skillet.

TilapiaGrits02After a few minutes, flip fillets over and season the other side with oregeno and  onion powder. Spread a tiny bit of butter on top of each filet and let it melt. Cook for about 2 minutes and then transfer to plate and cover with tin foil to keep hot until grits and kale is done.

I like to start the grits right after I put the fish in the skillet. The grits cook so fast that its a good time to get them started and then they should be cooked when you are taking the fish off of the stove.

TilapiaGrits03Boil the broth, add the instant grits and once cooked add all the remaining ingredients (all ingredients are not shown here so be sure to check out the following recipe for the full list of ingredients). Stir grits until all ingredients are combined, melted, creamy and delicious :)

Once you've removed the filets from the skillet, melt a couple more tablespoons in the skillet and add several tablespoons of minced garlic and let it cook until fragrant and a little browned. Add your cleaned and roughly chopped (stem removed) kale to the skillet and let cook for a few minutes. We like our kale almost burnt on the edges. Chewy AND crispy.

TilapiaGrits04And that's it! A simple, fast, semi-healthy week night meal. To lighten up the meal a bit you could always use EVOO or coconut oil in the skillet for both the fish and the kale and cut the cheese in half for the grits. They are so good with even just a wee bit of cheese.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Cajun Tilapia + Monterrey Jack & White Cheddar Grits + Pan Fried Kale
recipe adapted from Divas Can Cook blog

For the fish:
  • 4 filets (or as many as you need for your family), fresh or thawed
  • olive oil
  • minced garlic
  • Cajun seasoning
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • fresh parsley, chopped
  • butter
  • onion powder
  • dried oregano
Coat filets with olive oil. Top each filet with 1 teaspoon minced garlic and sprinkle with Cajun seasoning, salt, black pepper and fresh parsley. Heat 4 tablespoons of butter (or olive oil or coconut oil) over med-high heat. Once melted add the filets seasoned-side up. Let cook for 4 minutes. Flip and sprinkle other side with onion powder, dried oregano and top with a thin slice of butter. Let that melt and cook for 2-3 more minutes. Transfer to a plate and cover with tin foil to keep the fish hot while you are finishing up the rest of the meal.

For the grits:
  • 1 cup instant grits
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • optional: heavy cream, half and half or milk
  • 1/2 cup Monterrey jack, shredded
  • 1/2 cup sharp white cheddar, shredded
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne (you may want to cut this in half in you don't like a lot of spice. a little cayenne goes a long way.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • hot sauce, to taste
  • black pepper, to taste
Bring broth to a rapid boil. Add grits to boiling broth. Reduce heat cover and let cook for approximately 5 minutes. Watch them! Once they start spitting they are ready! When cooked add all the remainder of the ingredients. Depending on the thickness of your grits you may want to add a little milk, cream or half and half. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. Mix well.

For the kale:
  • 1 bunch of kale, removed from stem and cut into bit size pieces
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil (you may need more)
  • 4 tablespoons minced garlic
  • salt and pepper, to taste
Using the pan you cooked the fish in, add butter and olive oil. When butter is melted add the garlic and let cook 2 minutes or until fragrant and little browned. Throw in kale and let cook until just wilted and the ends start to crisp! You may need to add a little oil at this point. We like ours really crispy so I don't every usually add much

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hope you will make this and I hope your family loves it as much as mine does! You can bet it's on the menu for this week again! And probably the ONLY thing I will actually prepare in my kitchen this week. We've got one of those super-busy, something-every-day-and-night, weeks.

Happy Monday, friends!

Let me know if you make this and your family loves it!

Elle's Sweet, Purple Room

Elle's Room. DONE. Well, besides hanging some shelves. Something I've been asking the mister to do for weeeeeeks and will probably never get done unless I do it myself but he said something about studs and a stud finder so I guess I'll give him a couple more weeks to get the job done.

Love this sweet room so much. AND SO DOES ELLE!

It was Elle's idea from the beginning to have a purple room. With purple not being one of my top color choices I tried to persuade her to do a different color but she stuck to her guns and never gave up on her dream of a purple room ;) and I'm glad she didn't because I am so happy with it.

My only dislike with the light lavender on the walls is that it makes the trim and doors in her room look sooooo yellow. I think if we would have gone with a light blue or even a light pink that wouldn't have been the case. But oh well....

EllesRoom05EllesRoomCollage02My inspiration for the room was the floral pillow sham. We had these on our bed before we moved to the new house and I was so reluctant to get rid of them and when I looked closer at the colors I knew they would be perfect for Elle's room. So I went into designing Elle's purple paradise knowing I wanted to use all the fun colors that are in the sham: red, yellow (bed color yay!), teal, and black.

EllesRoom04The rooms in our house aren't much bigger than the rooms in our old house, so I knew I wanted to arrange furniture differently to give Elle as much play space as possible. The closets in our new house are AMAZING and fit all Elle's clothes AND all of her toys which is awesome. Helps keep her room tidy and organized :)

My sweet friend, Erin, came over after I got the room painted and helped me arrange furniture. I would have never thought to put the bed against the wall like this but I love it. I think Elle feels really safe and secure with it like this too plus it gives her tons of space to play! So a big THANK YOU to Erin for being awesome and creative and being a great friend.

EllesRoom03See yellow door. Bleh. Same paint and trim color throughout house.... Sherwin Williams Summer White, yet for some reason up next to this light lavender it looks so yellow.

See also weird shutters on window. Those will be coming down SOON. They offer no natural light in this room and it drives be bananas. Another honey-do that will hopefully get done this decade.

EllesRoomCollage01Elle loves to play school so I set up this little area with a dry erase board for her to play school to her sweet heart's content. She is here 90% of the time when she's home. The other 10% is divided up between her Shopkins, her books and writing notes to friends and family.

EllesRoom06This is where she sets up shop for her note writing. If you have received a note or drawing from her you than you should know you are truly LOVED by Elle. She feels so big sitting at her desk with her pens, paper, and notebooks.

EllesRoom01Never. Ever. Please. Thank you.

I hope Elle loves her sweet space in our new home and I pray she looks back fondly on it. As much as I don't want her to grow up. She is. Every day right before my eyes. I pray this room is a comfort for her and that she feels the love that went into it.
